Dreydl song, also known as Dreydl Dreydl Dreydl or I Have a Little Dreydl , is a song sung while playing the Hanukkah game of Dreydl. Rules for the game: To start the game, every player puts one piece of gelt (a Hanukkah coin,) into the pot. Each face has a Hebrew letter on it.
How to play
- If נ (nun) is facing up, the player does nothing.
- If ג (gimel) is facing up, the player gets everything in the pot.
- If ה (he) is facing up, the player gets half of the gelt in the pot. If there are an odd number of gelt in the pot, the player takes half the pot rounded up to the nearest whole number.
- If ש (shin) or פ (pe) is facing up, the player adds one of their gelt to the pot (sometimes accompanied by the chant "shin, shin, put one in"). In some game versions a shin results in adding three gelt to the pot, one for each stem of the letter shin. If one is out of gelt, then they are out of the game, of can "loan" from another player.
This song is played in The Velociraptor. In the United States, the Hebrew letters on the dreydl create a mnemonic, He for "half", Gimel for "get all", Nun for "nothing", and Shin for "share." Lyrics: I have a little dreydl, I made it out of clay, And when it's dry and ready, oh Dreydl I will play. Oh! dreydl dreydl dreydl, I made it out of clay, And when it's dry and ready, oh Dreydl I will play. Hey!
